Wow- this is like the perfect blind date - where I get to introduce myself and all my quirks and even still you want to hang out with me
Welcome to my column– Deana’s Dish!
I will dish about me, the socially acceptable secrets of my life, some tidbits of my family and what makes me click in New York City –and what helps to keep me mostly sane.
I am thrilled to let you in-to share some great tips, to commiserate on common experiences - and I will also describe some unique experiences in my life that I hope you will find as humorous as I tend to-of course changing the names of most of my family and friends to a save them from humiliation.
So me, Deana: I am a working mother of 2 girls, one is 5 years old and the other is 23 months old.
I eat a chocolate chip cookie everyday.
I don’t believe in dieting.
I go to acupuncture every week.
I try to workout at least 3 times week.
I can’t keep a budget to save my life.
I battle every week with the lack of closet space in our apartment and I wonder to my self, how many pairs of dress -up shoes does a 5 year old really need?
I also wonder and ponder (and worry)everyday how to make sure my children grow up with good values, good ethics and most of all are at peace with themselves. After all, their life is their journey, not mine or my husband’s to lead.
One surprise that you must know is that I never thought I would ever get married or have children I lived to work or so I thought!
After tons of dating, from Coast to Coast and even one man here in New York City for 5 years , I met my husband at 30 years old, actually on my 30th birthday at a work lunch that I did not want to even attend-yes I did what everyone tells women not to do, don’t date your boss.
I never wanted to be perceived in life as a “bad girl” (maybe that is from being brought up in Connecticut and Catholic)- but I broke the rule- 3 months later we were engaged a year later married , a year after that pregnant with my first child and three years later (after a small miracle) pregnant with my second child. I still am working.
Here is more insight into how I think and what I do: I am a producer/ director and own a production company where I have worked and produced music videos and television spots about musicians- Billy Joel, to Kanye West to Fergie. Lots of celebrities but I resisted any urge to be impressed- I was even courted once by a big music industry mogul (I said no- it was that bad girl thing- I was afraid of). Instead, the long hours spent in the edit room are about my aesthetic satisfaction. This is me.. a bit of a perfectionist, who still talks to my best friend for 20 years in LA everyday (also a mother of 2 kids girls).
I am fiercely loyal if I love you, committed to quality and I know when a piece of clothing is of great lasting style.. the same with my music.I am not too trendy, the classics are a must; even better paired with a great pair of Christian Louboutin Heels.
So this chatter will be about the politics of birthday parties; Super Tuesdays, the politics of our own careers and lastly who can forget the biggest challenge of all -making your household tick- the politics of the nanny mafia.
At the end of every entry I will list Deana’s Desires- not too raunchy, just the must haves, must see (art, theatre, film), must do and recommendations to help survive it all looking good!
Ok so the first of many lists to come:
1. Best Chocolate Chip Cookie (hard and crunchy. I make a visit there almost every day): Le Pain Quotidien- located all over New York City and Beverly Hills in Los Angels, CA
2. Best Jeans–with the MOST Honest Opinion on the Upper West Side, my friend’s store (which always smells amazing-great candles):
Linda Wolfe’s CPW and her employees (very cool girls who love to wait on people- trust me- first rate customer service TO ALL)- gosh, they are the artist of layering the coolest tops with making your tooshie look like gold in jeans.
495 Amsterdam(corner of 84th Street) 212-579-3737
3. Nicest, extraordinary competent Oral Surgeon for kids- Dr. Brett King, Tribeca Oral Surgery ( my 5year had to be rushed there to get an infected tooth pulled) 21 Murrray St. 2nd floor, New York City 212-267-3300
4. This puts a smile on my face (I love home furnishings) Tonichome.com- for the latest modern home decor. I love to mix antique pieces with a bit of GLAM!
5. Home Hair Cuts from my friend and stylist for over 13 years (see, I told you I was loyal!) Steve Berg (New York, New Jersey areas) 917-689-0383
Thank you for reading: my dad always told me don’t make a promise if you can’t keep it. I promise you one thing: to keep this blog real and true ! If we are going to raise great kids, we must keep ourselves nourished inside and out. I hope that this is NOURISHEMENT for your mind, body and soul.
Deana
