  • 1.HINT WATER: www.drinkhint.com Hint water has the wonderful slogan, drink water not sugar for a reason: their waters are free of preservatives, sugars and chemicals. I have written about them before because I am a big fan…but now they have four new flavors to try and the Blackberry and the Vanilla are especially great. As always, drinking water rather than flavored drinks is an important part of keeping a child well hydrated without damaging their teeth or their appetites…I keep hoping they will make the bottles a little smaller.

  • 2. SURF SWEETS: www.surfsweets.com are one of the only sweets that is free of corn syrup. They are organic and natural gummies that are free of dyes and chemicals and are fortified with Vitamin C. The Sour worms are a particular favorite and the jelly beans make for a healthier treat than many things coming up for Valentine’s day. Just remember how important it is to brush your child’s teeth after they eat gummy candy of any kind- organic or not.
  • 3. DISCOUNT SCHOOL SUPPLY www.discountschoolsupply.com is one of the most amazing catalogs ever for buying your child art supplies, pretend play, manipulatives and even storage supplies and furniture. It makes me want to start my own school!!!

Here in Manhattan it is cold and everyone is a little tense…but Obama is president and Valentine’s Day is only three weeks away…as a pediatrician I rarely have time to shop and I avoid a lot of Hallmark holidays but I confess Valentine’s Day is one of those holidays that always gets me shopping….here are some suggestions for healthier treats for your kids on the day when the rest of America is overindulging in heart-shaped boxes of bad chocolate.

  • The ultimate lunch box from www.lunchsense.com is not just healthy for the environment ( BPA free, lead free and vinyl free ) they are super healthy for your child-they promote the idea of portion control and reduce food waste! Plus they are light and hip to carry and it opens up to double as a sitting mat or placemat.

  • Planet Pixies Save the Earth from www.gifts.com (Kayla the Marsh Pixie).
The Planet Pixies are eco-friendly soft dolls. Each doll character hails from a different endangered zone of the globe and is crafted from certified organic cotton and natural materials. Even the packaging is made of 100 percent post-consumer recycled cardboard.

  • The HABA Duck Pull Toy from www.childtrek.com is an adorable wooden duck that can help babies and toddlers learn to walk. The HABA Duck Pull Toy is made of beech wood and acrylic using child-safe, non-toxic, water-based paints. HABA is a family-owned and multi-award winning German company.

  • Betty Lou’s organic smackers from www.veganessentials.com. North Shore Smackers have the healthy benefit of 1000mg of Spirulina in each treat. Made from chocolate, almond butter, oats and crisped brown rice. Almond Butter Smackers taste like peanut butter but safe for kids with peanut allergies.

  • Little Cupid Tutu from www.greenstartbabyart.com
This cute adorable tutu has been pixie cut on the bottom and then red and silver sequins have been handsewn onto the tutu. Just remember that rhinestones and sequins are choking hazards for children under 3 years of age,so if you choose to have these extras please watch your child carefully.

Green your child’s lunch

November 6, 2008 | Leave a Comment

If your child is allowed to bring lunch to school, you are lucky. You may not feel that way when as you face the early morning challenge and you are up packing a meal at 6:30 am that you wonder if he will eat, but you are lucky, because you have some control over what your child eats while he is at school. So lets look at how to make that an even better and safer and healthier opportunity.

ORGANIC AND NUTRITIOUS:
We know that pesticides and other chemicals contaminate our food supply. Most notably lead and mercury. These chemicals can cause serious health problems such as cancer, school learning issues and behavior problems, and hormone disruption. A recent study showed that Children who ate conventional diets had mean pesticide concentrations in their urine 9 times higher than the children who ate organic!
Serve organic food: and focus on high quality proteins and calcium, not grains and sugars. School-age children need at least 800 mg daily through age 8, and 1300 mg daily from age 9 to 13. Lunch might include a serving of Stonyfield Farm organic yogurt (www.stonyfieldfarm.com). Check out earthsbest.com as well for some organic healthy snack foods ways to pack .For children who don’t tolerate dairy, remember to include a calcium-enriched juice. And sources of lean protein include Organic cheese, hardboiled egg (organic eggs high in DHA), organic beans, or high-quality organic meats. Overly processed sandwich meats are high in sodium diacetate, sodium erythorbate, and nitrites.

PACKING BETTER COUNTS:
Save the environment and avoid more metal and plastic toxins by packing your child ‘s lunch in an eco-friendly and fun option that is reusable and safe- Check out the fantastic ones at www.mimithesardine.com. I adore the one with the animals on it and its conveniently sized and very well-made.
Spare the forests by using cloth napkins like I found at www.fabikins.com they are incredably soft and beautifully decorated and you can even order personalized ones to be sure they get home again after lunch.
And finally, pack your food and drink in reusable containers that are BPA free like the ones at www.thermos.com. remember never to microwave in plastic though!

PLAN AHEAD AND ENJOY THE PROCESS
Get your kids involved as much as possible with the shopping and planning of their meals. They can make lunch with you and can pick out healthy fruits and vegetables at the market. Then make a menu for the week so you and your child knows what each day will require- and then sneak in an extra treat of a note or a sticker reminding them that they are special to you. For some healthy recipes check out Laura Pasetta’s latest DVD “The Visual Guide: How To Make A Healthy Lunch For Kids”, along with demos, recipes and shopping lists, can be found at: www.healthychild.com.

  • 4. www.bitsybirdie.com features innovative, fun, well-made toys emphasizing safety and quality.
