Allergy Season- how to survive the blossoms!!
May 15, 2008
The onset of Spring means beautiful days of flowering trees and plants, and for so many allergic kids, a month plus of headaches, congestion and itchy eyes. The offending agents initially are wind-borne pollen from trees, later grasses and still later pollen and mold. Unfortunately, as those who have allergies know, there is no “cure”, but there are many things you can do to reduce the discomfort and prevent the chances of sinusitis, headache and wheezing.
Help keep your child
pollen- free:
- 1. Make sure to wash your child’s hands and face, at a minimum, each time they come inside
- 2. Make your child change out of his “outdoor clothes” as soon as he comes inside so he doesn’t shed the pollen all over the house and in his bedroom.
- 3. Remove shoes and socks and keep outside the front door.
- 4. Don’t let her play on newly cut grass on windy days when the cuttings will be airborne.
- 5. Be sure your pets have a bath and, if applicable, a close haircut in the spring. And don’t let them sleep on your child’s bed.
- 6. If you know your child has bad seasonal allergies, make a plan in advance with his doctor to start allergy medications early.
- 7. keep the air-conditioning on and the bedroom windows closed on high pollen-count days.
- 8. Get an air-purifier for your child’s room- check out www.sagebabynyc.com for the best choices.
- 9. Use a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter in your bedroom.
- 10. Clean floors with a vacuum cleaner that has a small-particle or HEPA filter.
- 11. Encase mattresses, box springs and pillows in allergy-proof covers.
