Living With and Without

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

I think it is very hard as a woman to have a relationship with their mom that is not always consistent nor reliable. My mother has been living with Multiple Sclerosis since I was 22 years old. Hers unfortunately is the “progressive type”. While I write this I must tell you that we were always very close growing up, but as in any mother daughter relationship we had our battles too.

Since she has been diagnosed, she has had many close calls of not pulling through extremely bad spells. She is in a wheel chair and has to have an aid most of the day. I in turn at a very young age have become the “mother” in our relationship. I used to wonder if she would ever see me get married? She did. She even saw my brother get married (he is four years younger) and than I thought she will never see me have children, she has! I feel very fortunate that she has been able to see all of these very monumental occasions in my life, especially since some women my age have already lost a parent.

We are not as close as we used to be, it is very hard since I have two daughters myself, and I think the reason for this is that I have become the care taker in many ways and I don’t want that job. Just like when both of my babies were born I wanted her to be at the hospital with me. I wanted her to be waiting in the recovery room for me and her brand new granddaughter,. Instead we called her with the news and the next question was always and is always ,”When can I see them / you”? Yes, there is anger, sadness and a host of other emotions when a parent suffers such a long term diabliting disease. I at times even get jealous that some of my friend’s moms come to see them. They go to theatre. They get on the floor and play with their grandchildren. It is a job for my mom even to feed herself and getting her in and out of the car is a marathon.

I often wonder when will I get the phone call that her journey is over. I think I will not be shocked, but I am sure I will be a terrible mess. She is my mom and now that I am a mom, it hurts more and than at the same time I do have some peace. She has seen and been able to play with her own granddaughters in her “own” way. is it the way I pictured when I was a very young women when I thought about having children one day?

Absolutely not,but no one has a crystal ball and life throws a lot of curve balls. This is her journey and her body will do what it will. I could never imagine how she must feel that she can’t lift her arm and to rely on someone else to do the simplest things. I just know that I have learned to show a lot of empathy and compassion. I still get pissed off somedays too and she does too! Whereas my very young daughters are very pragmatic about their Nana. My 6year old said to me , “Momma, Nana’s leg are never going to work are they”? I grabbed her and hugged her so tight and said , “No, baby they are not”. And than she said ,”That’s what she needs our help.”.

Dr. Geary Recommends: April News

I rarely shop- as a pediatrician and mother of three I tend to shop on-line, late at night. So I am always searching and researching for the very best products and then I stick with them- especially when it comes to my children.

  • 1.HINT WATER: www.drinkhint.com Hint water has the wonderful slogan, drink water not sugar for a reason: their waters are free of preservatives, sugars and chemicals. I have written about them before because I am a big fan…but now they have four new flavors to try and the Blackberry and the Vanilla are especially great. As always, drinking water rather than flavored drinks is an important part of keeping a child well hydrated without damaging their teeth or their appetites…I keep hoping they will make the bottles a little smaller.

  • 2. SURF SWEETS: www.surfsweets.com are one of the only sweets that is free of corn syrup. They are organic and natural gummies that are free of dyes and chemicals and are fortified with Vitamin C. The Sour worms are a particular favorite and the jelly beans make for a healthier treat than many things coming up for Valentine’s day. Just remember how important it is to brush your child’s teeth after they eat gummy candy of any kind- organic or not.
  • 3. DISCOUNT SCHOOL SUPPLY www.discountschoolsupply.com is one of the most amazing catalogs ever for buying your child art supplies, pretend play, manipulatives and even storage supplies and furniture. It makes me want to start my own school!!!

  • 4. ORGANIC LAYETTE www.sagebabyNYC.com is founded by two women who have really spent the time and done their homework to include only the best organic and natural products for babies. Their website is full of information and their products are well-chosen.

Another formula warning?

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

After writing to you about BPAs in formula and baby bottles, and scaring many parents about what their babies have already been exposed to, now we have another alarming report from the Centers for Disease Control about Perchlorate, a chemical component of rocket fuel. Researchers at the CDC found Perchlorate in 15 brands of powdered baby formula tested.

Perchlorate occurs naturally in the environment but is also manufactured for use in rocket propellant, explosives, fireworks, and road flares. Perchlorate is a potent toxin that effects the thyroid: the thyroid is needed for normal growth and development of the central nervous system, and may interfere with fetal and infant brain development.

Perchlorate is found in some drinking water in more than 50% of the US states. “Perchlorate contamination of drinking water is a very serious concern, particularly for infants,” said Anila Jacob, M.D., a senior scientist with Environmental Working Group. “As this unprecedented study demonstrates, infants fed cow’s milk-based powdered formula could be exposed to Perchlorate from two sources—tap water and formula. That suggests that millions of American babies are potentially at risk.”

The results of the latest study from the CDC found Perchlorate in all brands and types of infant formula, with the highest levels in powdered infant formulas made from cows’ milk containing lactose. This is probably due to the fact that mammals can store Perchlorate. However, the potential good news about infant formula is that infant formula contains iodine. Iodine is an important aspect of thyroid function and in theory would be expected to ameliorate any potential effects that Perchlorate would have to the thyroid.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) doesn’t regulate Perchlorate in drinking water, but that may change. To find out if your drinking water contains Perchlorate, the EPA suggests calling your state to find out if they require Perchlorate monitoring and if so, what were the results. You can also send a sample of your tap water to a lab certified to analyze perchlorate The EPA’s web site has a state-by-state list of links to drinking water labs.

At The Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards

When the stars hit the “orange carpet” Saturday to celebrate the 22nd Annual Kids’ Choice Awards, The Children’s Place was on the scene. While Dwayne Johnson hosted and The Jonas Brothers performed, celebrities flocked backstage to The Children’s Place lounge.

Everyone who stopped by scored a The Children’s Place t-shirt—the perfect basic for any outfit. Stars also stopped by The Children’s Place craft stations to decorate their own The Children’s Place messenger bags, which will be auctioned off to benefit the Books for Kids Foundation. Celebrities like Paula Abdul, Chace Crawford and David Archuleta took a break backstage to design messenger bags for the cause.

Founded to promote literacy among all children with a special emphasis on low-income and at-risk preschool-aged children, Books for Kids creates libraries, donates books, and partners with literacy programs to develop the critical early foundation and skills which young children need to be successful in life. Since its founding in 1986, the Books for Kids Foundation has provided children with more than 5 million books, created 56 libraries and provided literacy programs in many of these locations.
